Soft Bread Rolls
Ingredients
• 4 cups (500g) bread flour
• 2¼ tsp (7g) instant yeast
• 2 tbsp granulated sugar
• 1½ tsp salt
• 1 cup (240ml) warm milk or warm water
• ¼ cup (60g) unsalted butter, softened or vegetable oil
• 1 large egg
For Brushing
• 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
• 2 tbsp melted butter (optional, after baking)
Method
1. In a large bowl, combine the bread flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt.
2. Add the warm milk (or water), softened butter (or oil), and egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
3. Knead for 10–12 minutes until the dough is smooth, soft, and elastic.
4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1–1½ hours, or until doubled in size.
5. Punch down the dough and divide it into 12–15 equal pieces.
6. Shape each piece into a smooth ball by tucking the edges underneath.
7. Arrange the rolls on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray, leaving a little space between them.
8. Cover and let the rolls rise again for 30–45 minutes, until puffy.
9. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
10. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 18–22 minutes, or until golden brown.
11. Brush the hot rolls with melted butter for a soft, glossy crust, if desired.
12. Allow the rolls to cool slightly before serving.
